Interior Design

INTERIOR DESIGN

Interior Design is a professional discipline. It is a multi-faced profession in which creative and technical solutions are applied within a structure to achieve a built interior environment and interior lifestyle enhancement. An interior designer must understand the interior space and structure, manipulation of colours, texture light, form etc, as well as provide the requisite technical knowledge and skills to realize visualized intent. The Interior Design process follows a systematic and coordinated methodology, including research, analysis and integration of knowledge into the creative process, whereby the needs and resources of the client are satisfied to produce an interior space that fulfils the project goals. An understanding of all aspects of project management is a must for a successful interior designer.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The interior designing students learn about the aesthetic concern, physical needs and sociological dynamics- how we interact, how we make ourselves comfortable, and how we move. They are trained to conceive and manipulate various design spaces with special attention to materials, colour and textures.

Students also learn about the conceptual, technical and professional aspects of creating an interior environment, using concepts and images to handle increasingly complex, residential, corporate and commercial spaces. They gain the skill of drafting, rendering, materials, space planning, computer-aided designing and knowledge on furniture, its types and history. Interior design majors are required to fulfil professional internships by visiting construction companies in the second year and architectural firms or Interior design firms while working on their independent thesis project in the final year.

CAREER PROSPECTS

As interior designers, students may start their own business or join established interior design or architectural firms. They have the opportunity to prepare for careers ranging from residential and commercial design, restaurant, stage set design, exhibition design, furniture design, Lighting design or as freelance designers.
